How to play

Diamonds Rules

Diamonds (Pagat rules reference)

This project uses the invented game rules described on Pagat: https://www.pagat.com/invented/diamonds1.html

The game is played by 3 players with a 33-card pack: 7 through Ace plus a joker.

Players and cards

  • There are three players.
  • The 33-card pack includes 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, and a joker.
  • Cards keep their usual ranks, except the ace can be either highest or lowest at the whim of the player who plays it.
  • The joker is either the highest or lowest card in the pack again at the whim of the person playing it.
  • When the joker is played, the player chooses whether it is high or low, and it must be given a suit.
  • Diamonds are always trumps.
  • A diamond always beats a card from another suit.

Deal

  • Deal, bidding and play proceed clockwise.
  • The first dealer is chosen at random.
  • The turn to deal rotates clockwise after each hand.
  • The cards are shuffled and cut.
  • The dealer deals 10 cards to each player and 3 face-down to the middle as the kitty.
  • The deal pattern is usually: 3 to each player, 1 to the kitty, 4 to each player, 1 to the kitty, 3 to each player, 1 to the kitty.

Bidding

  • The bidding begins with the player to dealer's left and continues clockwise.
  • Players estimate how many tricks they can win.
  • Each player then says how many.
  • Each player privately takes one card from the kitty and adds it to their hand. Nobody else should know which card was taken.
  • Each player then discards any card from their hand, which may be the kitty card they just took. That discard is kept secret.
  • The discarded card is the player's point card, used for scoring.
  • Each player is left with 10 cards, so there are 10 tricks in each hand.
  • After each player has discarded, each player has a chance to raise their bid by one, lower it by one or leave it the same.
  • The final person to bid must choose a bid so that the total number of tricks does not equal ten.
  • The players must then get exactly the number of tricks they bid.

Play

  • The player to the left of the dealer starts play by leading a card.
  • Play continues clockwise.
  • This is a trick-taking game in which players try to win or lose tricks as required.

Scoring

  • If you get exactly the number of tricks you bid, you get the value of your point card added to your score.
  • If not, you get the value of your point card taken off.

Card values

  • 7 = 7
  • 8 = 8
  • 9 = 9
  • 10 = 10
  • Jack = 11
  • Queen = 12
  • King = 13
  • Ace = 15
  • Joker = 20

End of the game

  • The first player to reach 100 wins.
  • If someone reaches -100, the person with the highest score wins.
